Ringing ears after a loud night: what to do next
What temporary tinnitus after a concert or a loud event usually means, what helps in the first days, and when to get your hearing checked.

Why your ears ring after loud sound
Sound above safe levels tires or damages the tiny hair cells of the inner ear. The NIDCD explains that noise-induced hearing loss can come from a single very loud event or from repeated exposure over years. A ringing or muffled feeling after a concert, a club night or fireworks is a sign that the sound was too loud for too long.
Give your ears quiet time
For the next day or two, keep the volume of everything low: no headphones at high level, no second loud night in a row. Many people notice the ringing fade as the ear recovers. Quiet does not mean silence; a room at normal conversation level is fine.
Do not test the sound
Listening for the ringing in a silent room, or turning up music to cover it, keeps attention on it. A soft, steady background sound at a comfortable level is a gentler option while you wait.
Write down what happened
Note the date, the event, how long you were exposed, whether you wore protection and how loud the ringing feels each morning. If it fades, you have a record of what your ears tolerate. If it does not, this history is exactly what a hearing professional will ask for.
When to book a hearing check
The NHS advises seeing a GP if tinnitus does not go away or is getting worse, and getting urgent help if it comes with sudden hearing loss, follows a head injury, or is accompanied by weakness or dizziness. Ringing that persists beyond a week or two after the event deserves a proper assessment.
Plan the next loud event
Earplugs made for music lower the volume without muffling the sound. Standing away from speakers, taking breaks outside and limiting how many loud nights you stack together protect the hearing you still have.
Questions
How long does ringing last after a concert?
Often a few hours to a couple of days while the ear recovers. If it lasts longer than a week or two, or gets worse, see a doctor or an audiologist.
Should I use headphones while my ears ring?
Keep them off or very quiet for a day or two. Low-level background sound from a speaker is gentler than earbuds turned up.
Can an app fix noise-induced tinnitus?
No. Tacet helps you match the pitch and keep a journal, which is useful for a consultation, but it does not treat hearing damage.
