Single vs dual n-back: what changes and where to start

Compare single and dual n-back with a worked 2-back example. Understand streams, difficulty and what your results can actually tell you.

The difference is the number of streams

Single n-back asks you to track one changing stream, such as letters or positions. Dual n-back asks you to track two streams at the same time, commonly a position and a spoken letter. In either version, N tells you how many turns back to compare. “Dual” does not mean N=2: you can do dual 1-back, dual 2-back or a higher level.

Keep the level and the task separate

Think of two independent settings: the distance back in the sequence and the number of things you follow. Moving from single 2-back to dual 2-back adds a second stream while keeping the distance at two turns. Moving from dual 1-back to dual 2-back increases the distance while keeping two streams. Changing both at once makes it harder to identify why your results changed.

A worked example at N=2

Imagine three turns. Turn 1: top-left position and letter A. Turn 2: centre position and letter B. Turn 3: top-left position and letter C. At turn 3, compare with turn 1. A position-only single task has a match. A letter-only single task has no match. In the dual version, answer for the position only: the positions match, but C and A do not. These are two separate decisions, not a requirement for both signals to match.

When following one stream is useful

If the comparison rule is confusing, first work through a short written sequence with only letters. At N=1, A, B, B has a match on turn 3; at N=2, A, B, A has a match on turn 3. This is a way to understand the instruction, not a claim that single n-back is a feature of every app. Once the rule is clear, add a second sequence and decide separately for each.

The website illustrates the rule; practice sessions take place in the iPhone app. If one stream is unclear, check the sound and instructions rather than ignoring that stream and treating the result as a complete dual-task score.

What “harder” does not establish

Having more signals to follow does not, on its own, establish greater benefits outside the exercise. Soveri and colleagues’ 2017 meta-analysis found that improvements were most pronounced on other n-back tasks, with smaller effects on more distant outcomes. That is a reason to distinguish learning the exercise from a broad improvement in intelligence. A higher single or dual n-back level is not an IQ measurement.

Compare like with like

Record the task version, N, pace and scoring rule before comparing sessions. A single 3-back score and a dual 2-back score describe different tasks. Even two dual 2-back implementations may use different timings or count responses differently. Compare repeated sessions under the same settings and inspect missed matches and false alarms separately if those details are available.

Choose the next step by the question you have

If you are learning the rule, read the beginner guide and the explanation of N levels. If you can follow both streams but your scores fluctuate, use a session log. If you want to know whether practice transfers to other abilities, read the evidence guide. Choose a manageable exercise because you understand it and want to practise it, not because the word “dual” promises a particular result.
