Calculate left-to-right, not right-to-left

School algorithms teach calculating from right to left with pencil carries. In mental math, always multiply the most significant digits first. For 43 × 6, compute 40 × 6 = 240, then 3 × 6 = 18, and combine them to get 258 immediately.

The doubling and halving method

When multiplying by an even number, you can repeatedly double one factor while halving the other without altering the product. For instance, 16 × 35 becomes 8 × 70 = 560 in a single instant.

Squaring numbers ending in five

To square any number ending in 5, multiply the tens digit by the next integer and append 25. For 65 squared, multiply 6 × 7 = 42, then attach 25 to reach 4225. The principle generalizes to any pair of numbers sharing tens digits whose units sum to ten.
