Choose one method to notice

Mental arithmetic becomes easier to study when you can say what you tried: breaking numbers apart, rounding and compensating, doubling, halving or using a known fact.

Protect accuracy before speed

A fast wrong answer gives weak feedback. First make the operation and method clear, then let speed emerge from repetition rather than pressing through uncertainty.

Keep an error notebook in miniature

When you miss, record the operation type and the point where the reasoning changed. The goal is not to collect shameful mistakes but to find the next method worth practising.

Mix familiar and stretching problems

A useful session can include a few comfortable questions and a few that require more steps. If every problem is maximal, fatigue can hide the method you intended to learn.
