What the Stroop test measures

When the word RED is written in blue ink, your brain automatically reads the word faster than it can name the font color. Resolving that mismatch requires response inhibition: suppressing the reflexive reading impulse to state the physical color. This delay is known as the Stroop interference effect.

Congruent versus incongruent trials

In congruent trials, the word matches the ink color (the word GREEN in green text). In incongruent trials, they clash (the word YELLOW in purple text). Comparing your reaction times across both conditions reveals how much cognitive effort you require to filter out distracting automatic inputs.

Why reaction time slows down under conflict

Automatic processes like reading familiar words require minimal conscious attention. Color naming requires active visual selection. Under conflict, your prefrontal cortex must actively override the verbal candidate before the motor response can trigger, adding tens to hundreds of milliseconds of latency.

Training selective attention and inhibition

Practicing response inhibition drills helps sharpen attentional control and reduces impulsivity in choice tasks. Regular sessions show you whether your interference score drops through faster conflict resolution or through steadier baseline pacing.
