Recording your voice for practice: a simple setup
Where to hold the phone, how loud to speak, what to record every week and how to listen back without judging yourself out of practising.

Same phone, same distance, same room
Comparisons only mean something when the conditions repeat. Hold the phone about a hand’s length from your mouth, in the same quiet room, at roughly the same time of day. Write those three details down once so you can rebuild the setup.
Speak, do not perform
Read the same short paragraph each week at your everyday speaking level. A performance voice tells you about your performance; the recording you need is the one that sounds like a phone call.
Record two things: a reading and a held note
The reading shows your habitual pitch and pace. A comfortable vowel held for a few seconds shows the pitch you rest on and whether it wavers. Together they give a picture that a single sentence cannot.
Keep sessions short and the voice comfortable
The NIDCD’s advice on taking care of your voice includes avoiding yelling and resting the voice when it is tired or hoarse. A recording session is not the place to push for range.
Listen back once, with one question
Choose a question before pressing play: was my pitch steady, or did I rush the ends of sentences? One question stops you from hearing everything wrong at once. Discomfort at hearing your own voice is normal and fades with repetition.
Watch the trend, not the day
A single measurement moves with sleep, hydration and mood. Look at four weeks of readings side by side before deciding anything about progress.
Questions
Why does my recorded voice sound different from what I hear?
You normally hear yourself partly through the bones of your skull, which adds low frequencies. The recording is closer to what other people hear.
How often should I record?
Once a week is enough to see a trend. Daily recordings add noise from sleep and mood without adding information.
Does VocalMaxx need a microphone accessory?
No. The iPhone microphone is sufficient as long as the distance and the room stay the same between sessions.
