Chat Wrapped: what conversation counts can and cannot show

How Clutch counts a fragment of an exchange on the iPhone, what each number means, why the share card contains no name and no message text, and the limits of reading a relationship in statistics.

What Chat Wrapped does

Chat Wrapped is one of the three free tools of Clutch, a message studio in development for iPhone. It takes a fragment of an exchange, either from a screenshot or typed by hand, and turns it into a colourful recap: messages and words on each side, the share of messages written by each person, the messages that contain a question mark, and a repeated emoji when one clearly leads.

Reading happens on the iPhone

A chosen screenshot is read on the device by Apple Vision, Apple’s text recognition. The recognised text and the speakers are then shown for review, because recognition can confuse a name, a time stamp or a sticker with a message. Only the corrected fragment is counted. The limits are stated in the app: 40 messages and 10,000 characters, and a shortened import is labelled as such. Nothing is saved afterwards and nothing is sent to an AI provider.

What the numbers mean

Each figure describes the visible fragment and nothing else. A share of 67% means that, in these messages, one person wrote two out of three. The count of question marks shows who asked questions in this passage. Research by Huang and colleagues links question-asking, especially follow-up questions, to being liked more in conversations, so the count can be a useful mirror: “I asked nothing in this whole exchange.”

What the numbers cannot show

A fragment is not a relationship. Twenty messages from a busy evening say nothing certain about last month or next week. Message counts do not measure attraction, interest, compatibility or sincerity: some people write one long message, others ten short ones. Clutch deliberately shows no score of this kind and draws no conclusion about the other person’s feelings.

A share card without private content

The recap can be exported as a vertical card. By design, the card type has no field for a name, a message or an imported emoji: it contains counts, percentages, a label and the Clutch brand. It is generated on the device, shown in a preview, and shared only through the system share sheet, to the destination chosen by the user.

Before importing an exchange

An exchange belongs to two people. Import only conversations that you take part in, remove names and private details on the review screen, and think twice before sharing anything derived from someone else’s words, even as numbers. Clutch is not on the App Store yet; this page describes the version in development.

Questions

Does Chat Wrapped upload my screenshot?

No. In the version in development, the screenshot is read on the iPhone by Apple Vision, the fragment is counted on the device, nothing is saved afterwards and nothing is sent to an AI provider.

Can Chat Wrapped tell whether someone is interested in me?

No. It shows plain counts for the fragment you reviewed. It does not measure attraction, interest or compatibility, and it draws no conclusion about feelings.

What does the share card contain?

Counts, percentages, a label and the Clutch brand. The card has no field for a name, a message or an imported emoji.
