Dual N-Back · Schulte table

Schulte table online

Find the numbers 1 to 25 in order, as fast as you can, on a freshly shuffled 5×5 grid. No account and no download. The rules are the ones used by the Schulte table in the Lab of the Dual N-Back app.

A grid of 25 shuffled numbers appears when you press Start and the clock starts at once. Tap 1, then 2, and so on up to 25. A wrong tap adds 1 second.

How to play

  1. Press Start. A 5×5 grid appears with the numbers 1 to 25 in random positions, and the clock starts at once.
  2. Tap or click 1, then 2, then 3, up to 25. The number to find is always shown above the grid. On a keyboard, move with the arrow keys and press Enter.
  3. A wrong tap adds 1 second to your time and counts as an error. You stay on the same number until you find it.
  4. The clock stops on 25. The classic rule is to keep your eyes on the centre of the grid and find the numbers with your peripheral vision. Nothing here checks it, so compare only times played the same way.

How the score works

Your result is your total time in seconds, including 1 second per error. The page also shows the average per number (total ÷ 25), your errors and your accuracy, which is 25 ÷ (25 + errors).

The tier comes from the app's own scale, from 1 to 11. Under 45 seconds is tier 2, under 28 seconds tier 4, under 20 seconds tier 6, under 14 seconds tier 9 and under 10 seconds tier 11. The developer chose this scale; it is not a norm. Your own earlier times on the same device are a better reference.

What it measures

Your time reflects visual search, attention on the next target and how fast you respond, on this grid, on this device, that day. It is not an IQ score, a vision test or a diagnosis.

Practice makes people faster at the table itself. That does not show that reading, memory or intelligence improve as well. The guide below goes through the evidence, with its sources.

Keep your times on iPhone

The Schulte table is one of the 12 tests in the Lab of the Dual N-Back iPhone app, next to the Stroop test and the chimp test, and the app keeps your best result. What is free and what needs Pro is explained on the app page; the App Store shows prices before you buy.

Questions

Is this the same test as in the app?

Yes: the same 5×5 grid with the numbers 1 to 25, the same 1-second penalty per error and the same tier scale, taken from the Schulte table in the Dual N-Back app's Lab. The app keeps your history and your best result; this page forgets everything when you leave.

What is a good Schulte table time?

There is no reliable norm for online versions, because grids, spacing and error rules differ. Compare your time with your own earlier times, on the same device and with the same rule.

Will this raise my IQ?

Nothing here shows that. You should get faster at finding numbers on a Schulte table with practice, and that is all this page can tell you.

Is my score saved or sent anywhere?

No. Your time and your taps stay in this page and are gone when you leave it. The site's visit counter does not record game answers or scores.
