Dual N-Back · Chimp test

Chimp test online

Memorize where the numbers are, tap 1 to hide them all, then find the rest in order. The sequence grows by one number at each level. No account and no download. The rules are the ones used by the chimp memory test in the Lab of the Dual N-Back app.

Level1
Next1
Lives3 of 3

Numbers appear on a board when you press Start. Take your time, then tap 1: all the others are hidden at that moment. Find them in order. A wrong tap costs one of your 3 lives.

How to play

  1. Press Start. Numbers from 1 upward appear on a board of 5 columns and 6 rows. Level 1 has 4 numbers.
  2. Take as long as you like to memorize where they are. There is no time limit. When you tap 1, all the other numbers are hidden.
  3. Tap the hidden squares in ascending order: 2, then 3, and so on. Finish the sequence and the next level adds one number, up to 15. On a keyboard, move with Tab and press Enter.
  4. A wrong tap costs one of your 3 lives and gives you a new board at the same level. The game ends when you have no lives left.

How the score works

Your result is the number of levels you completed. Level 1 has 4 numbers, level 2 has 5, and level 12 has 15, which is the maximum. A game that ends before level 1 is finished scores 0.

The page also shows the longest sequence you completed, your accuracy (correct taps ÷ all taps) and the length of the game.

What it measures

The test asks you to keep positions and their order in mind once the numbers are gone. Your result describes how you did on this version of the task. It is not an IQ score, and no threshold works across every version of the test, because timing, boards and lives differ.

The name comes from research on memory for numerals in chimpanzees, such as the 2007 study by Inoue and Matsuzawa. A web result does not say whether you are more or less intelligent than a chimpanzee.

Keep your levels on iPhone

The chimp test is one of the 12 tests in the Lab of the Dual N-Back iPhone app, next to the Stroop test and the Schulte table, and the app keeps your best result. What is free and what needs Pro is explained on the app page; the App Store shows prices before you buy.

Questions

Is this the same test as in the app?

Yes: the same board of 5 columns and 6 rows, 4 numbers at level 1 and up to 15, the numbers hidden when you tap 1, and 3 lives, taken from the chimp memory test in the Dual N-Back app's Lab. The app resumes at the level you have reached and keeps your best result; this page starts at level 1 and saves nothing.

Is there a time limit?

No. You decide when to tap 1. The time shown in your result is only for information and does not change your score.

What is a good chimp test score?

There is no universal threshold, because versions differ on timing, board size and lives. Compare your own attempts under the same rules.

Does it measure IQ?

No. It gives a result on one short memory task. It does not measure intelligence and practising it is not shown to raise IQ.

Is my score saved or sent anywhere?

No. Your level and your taps stay in this page and are gone when you leave it. The site's visit counter does not record game answers or scores.
