Read one VocalMaxx recording’s vocal frequency median, P10–P90 range and semitone stability without treating them as health scores.

## Keep the three measurements separate

VocalMaxx reports a median vocal frequency in Hz, a speaking-frequency range from P10 to P90 in Hz, and stability in semitones. They describe different aspects of the accepted recording. Read the labels and units before comparing the numbers. None is an instruction to lower your voice, a measure of confidence or a clinical assessment.

## Read the median as a middle value

The app sorts the frequency estimates retained from voiced frames and takes their median. A hypothetical result of 140 Hz means a middle value of those retained estimates, not that every syllable was spoken at 140 Hz. Pauses and unvoiced sounds are not interchangeable with voiced pitch estimates. Keep the recording task and conditions beside the result.

## Understand what P10 and P90 leave out

P10 and P90 are lower and upper percentile values in the retained frequency estimates. A hypothetical displayed interval of 110–190 Hz is not your absolute lowest and highest possible vocal frequency. Values outside that central interval can exist. It also does not establish your singing range: an ordinary speaking recording is a different task from exploring musical notes.

## Interpret stability in its own unit

The stability calculation measures dispersion after converting vocal frequencies to a semitone scale. It is not another Hz reading, and it is not a recommended target. For example, a result labelled 1.2 semitones should not be compared numerically with a median labelled 140 Hz. Changes in phrasing and the recording can affect these descriptions without establishing better or worse vocal health.

## Compare recordings without forcing a result

For a comparison, use a comfortable speaking task, similar placement and similar conditions. Inspect the median, interval and stability together rather than choosing whichever number looks favourable. NIDCD recommends avoiding extremes of vocal range and resting the voice when it is tired or hoarse. Do not force a lower pitch or hold an uncomfortable sound to move a statistic.

## Use the numbers for a limited observation

Write an observation such as “the median was lower in this recording” rather than “my voice is healthier.” An accepted recording is not a diagnosis or proof of a lasting change. If speaking causes pain or persistent difficulty, seek appropriate professional advice instead of using app statistics to rule out a problem.

## Questions

### Is the P10–P90 interval my full vocal range?

No. It describes percentile values from retained voiced frequency estimates in that recording, not every frequency you can produce or your singing range.

### Does a lower stability number prove a healthier voice?

No. It describes frequency dispersion in the recording, not a clinical condition or a required target.
