# How to measure and compare your voice pitch recordings

What hertz actually describes, why a single reading means little, how to keep two recordings comparable, and how to read a range without chasing a target number.

## What a pitch measurement actually is

When an app reports your voice at 120 Hz, it is describing how many times per second your vocal folds are opening and closing. That is a physical count, not a judgement. Higher numbers mean faster vibration, which we hear as a higher pitch. Everything else people attach to that number, whether a voice sounds deep, authoritative or pleasant, is interpretation layered on top of a measurement that only knows about frequency.

## Why one reading tells you almost nothing

A single number captures one moment of one sentence recorded in one room. Your speaking pitch moves constantly: it rises at the end of a question, drops when you are tired, sits higher when you are animated. Measuring once and treating the result as your voice is like weighing yourself once after a large meal and calling it your weight. The useful unit is a series taken under similar conditions, not a reading.

## Speaking pitch and range are different things

Two measurements are commonly confused. Your habitual speaking pitch is where your voice sits when you talk without thinking about it. Your range is the span between the lowest and highest notes you can produce at all. They move independently: someone can have a wide range and a habitual pitch near the bottom of it, or a narrow range they sit in the middle of. An app that reports a single figure is usually describing the first.

## Keep the recording setup identical

Comparability is the whole game, and it comes from repeating four things. The same room, because hard surfaces and small spaces change what the microphone receives. The same distance from the phone, because moving closer raises the level and can shift what the analysis latches onto. The same phone. And the same time of day, for reasons the next section explains. Change one and the difference you measure may be the room rather than your voice.

## Why time of day matters more than people expect

Voices are lower and less flexible shortly after waking, and they change again after hours of speaking. If you record on Monday morning and again on Thursday evening, you have measured two different physiological states, not a change in your voice. Pick a slot and defend it. Morning readings are consistent with each other; morning against evening is not.

## Read the same text every time

Use a fixed passage of a few sentences rather than improvising. Improvised speech varies in pitch far more than read speech, because you are thinking while talking and your intonation follows the thought. A fixed passage removes that variable at no cost, and it makes two recordings months apart genuinely comparable.

## Hydration, and why it is not a detail

Sivasankar reviewed the role of hydration in vocal fold physiology in 2010, and the short version is that the tissue behaves differently when it is dry. That is relevant to measurement as well as to comfort: a dehydrated voice is not the same instrument as a hydrated one. Recording immediately after coffee, after a night of poor sleep, or after several hours of silence will not give you the same reading as your usual state.

## What the numbers cannot tell you

A frequency figure knows nothing about whether your voice is healthy, whether it suits you, or whether other people find it deep. It cannot diagnose anything. Hoarseness, pain, a voice that tires quickly or a change lasting more than two weeks are reasons to see a doctor, and no app measurement replaces that examination. The number is a description of vibration, and that is all.

## Beware of target numbers found online

Published averages exist for large groups, and they are not a goal. They describe a distribution, which means most individuals fall outside the average by definition. Treating a population figure as a target you should reach is the fastest way to make yourself unhappy about a voice that is working perfectly well, and to push it in ways that cause strain.

## What a useful record looks like

Four fields per session are enough: the date, the reading, the time of day, and one word on your state such as rested, tired or hoarse. That last field explains most of the outliers you would otherwise puzzle over. Anything more elaborate tends to be abandoned within a fortnight, and an abandoned record produces nothing.

## Reading a series rather than a point

After eight or ten sessions taken the same way, look at the shape rather than the last value. Is the middle of the cloud moving, or is it just noisier? Day-to-day variation in this measurement is large, so a single low reading is not a change and a single high one is not progress. If nothing moves over a month of consistent recording, that is information too.

## Sharing what you hear

One genuinely useful thing a pitch tool can do is let someone else hear the frequency you are describing. Talking about a voice in words is imprecise, and a played tone is not. This matters if you are preparing to see a professional: arriving with a series of recordings and a consistent method gives them something to work from that a description cannot.

## When practice makes sense, and when it does not

If your goal is comfort rather than a number, measurement plays a supporting role at most. Guzman and colleagues examined vocal tract and glottal function during and after vocal exercising in 2013, and work of that kind is why guided practice is done gradually and stopped when it hurts. Practising toward a frequency target, rather than toward comfort, is how people strain a voice that was fine.

## What to do if something feels wrong

Stop. Pain, a scratchy sensation that persists, a voice that gives out, or hoarseness lasting more than two weeks are not things to measure your way through. The NIDCD publishes practical guidance on taking care of the voice, and a doctor or a speech-language pathologist can examine what no recording can show. Measurement is not triage.
