Speaking range versus singing range, how to find your lowest and highest notes with gentle slides, and why one measurement is never the whole answer.

## Two ranges, two different questions

Vocal range can mean two things. Your singing range, sometimes called your physiological range, runs from the lowest to the highest note you can produce at all. Your speaking range is the much narrower band your voice actually uses in conversation. People searching for their vocal range usually want the first, often to choose songs or a voice type, but the second matters more for everyday speech. They are measured differently, and it helps to know which one you are after before you start.


## What a range measurement is

A range is reported either as frequencies in hertz or as note names, such as a low note around the bottom of the bass clef and a high one somewhere above it. Each note name corresponds to a frequency, so the two are interchangeable. A useful range is not just two numbers, though. Clinicians use a voice range profile, which Titze (1992) describes as a display of vocal intensity range against fundamental frequency. It shows not only how low and high you can go, but how loudly or softly you can sing each note.


## Why the edges are fragile

The same voice range profile research shows that the intensity range is reduced at the extremes of the frequency range. In plain terms, your lowest and highest notes are the ones you can produce only in a narrow band of loudness, and they are the least reliable. That is why a range measured on a single attempt, pushed to the limit, overstates what your voice can use. The notes that matter for singing or speaking are the ones you can produce with some control, not the ones you can squeak out once.


## Prepare before you measure

Measure on a day when your voice feels normal, not after shouting at a match, not with a cold and not first thing in the morning. The NIDCD advises avoiding speaking or singing when your voice is hoarse or tired and resting it when you are ill. Drink some water, do a short gentle warm-up such as humming on comfortable notes, and sit or stand upright. A warmed, rested voice gives a more honest reading than a cold one, and it is less likely to be strained by the test.


## Finding your lowest note

Start on a comfortable speaking note and slide gently downward on an open vowel or a hum, in small steps. Stop at the last note that is clearly voiced: a steady tone you can hold for a moment. Below it, most voices turn into a creaky, popping sound, which is vocal fry, or into breath with little tone. Neither counts as part of a usable range. Note where the clear tone ends, repeat once or twice, and keep the lowest note you reach every time rather than the one you managed once.


## Finding your highest note

Now slide upward from the same comfortable note. At some point the quality of your voice will change, often with a flip or crack into a lighter sound. That is normal, and you can continue lightly in that lighter quality if it feels easy. Stop when you notice squeezing, straining or the urge to push with your neck. The NIDCD advises avoiding the extremes of your vocal range, such as screaming, so a range test should never feel like one. The top of your usable range is where the voice is still free.


## Glides are gentler than single notes

A continuous slide, sometimes called a siren, is easier on the voice than jumping to separate notes, and it shows the whole path rather than a few points. Do it on a hum, on “ng” as in the end of “sing”, or on a lip trill, where air makes the lips vibrate. Titze (2006) describes lip trills, humming and phonation through straws as semi-occluded vocal tract exercises used widely by clinicians, singing teachers and voice coaches, and explains the physics that make them efficient. Keep each slide soft.


## The break, and what registers are

The flip you hear on the way up is a transition between ways the larynx vibrates, often called registers. Henrich (2006), reviewing the history of the term, notes that the notion of registers is still confused in the singing voice community and defined in many different ways, and proposes describing them by laryngeal mechanism. For your purposes, a break is not a flaw to hide from the measurement. It is a landmark worth writing down, because it tells you where your voice changes gear.


## Measuring your speaking range

Your speaking range is found in speech, not scales. Read a short paragraph aloud at a normal pace, or talk for a minute about something ordinary, and record it. The useful figures are the average level your voice sits at and how far it moves around that level. Voice range profile analysis includes speaking range dynamics as a separate feature, as Sulter and colleagues (1994) describe. Your speaking range sits well inside your singing range, and that is exactly how it should be.


## Recording conditions change the result

A range test is only as good as the recording. Use a quiet room, because background noise can confuse pitch detection. Keep the same distance from the microphone each time, use the same device, and avoid rooms with strong echo. If you want to compare measurements across weeks, repeat them at a similar time of day, since voices often sit lower and rougher in the morning. Changing several of these things at once makes it impossible to know whether your range changed or only the setup did.


## Expect variation from day to day

Your range is not a fixed property you measure once. Tiredness, hydration, illness, the amount you talked the day before and simple day-to-day variation all move it. Measure on three or four different days and record the notes you reach consistently. Treat the reliable range as your working range, and treat an occasional extra note at either end as a bonus rather than a new baseline. This also protects you from chasing a record high note on a day your voice would rather rest.


## What range does and does not tell you

Voice type labels such as soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass are often assigned from range alone online, but singing teachers typically also listen to where the voice sounds best and where its transitions fall. Range is one piece of information. It will help you choose song keys, notice where your voice is comfortable and see whether practice is keeping it healthy. It will not tell you how good a singer or speaker you are, and a wider range is not automatically a better voice.


## When to stop and get advice

A range test should never hurt. Stop immediately if you feel pain, a raw throat or new hoarseness. The NIDCD advises seeing a doctor if your voice has been hoarse for more than three weeks, especially without a cold or flu, if speaking or swallowing is painful, or if you lose your voice for more than a few days. A sudden loss of notes you used to reach easily is also worth mentioning to a doctor or a speech-language pathologist.
