# How to find the pitch of your tinnitus, and why it is useful

A step-by-step method for matching the frequency of your tinnitus with a tone generator, and what to do with the number once you have it.

## What pitch matching is

Pitch matching means playing tones at different frequencies until one sounds like the same note as your tinnitus. Audiologists do it in clinic as part of an assessment, and you can approximate it yourself with any tone generator. The result is a frequency in hertz, usually somewhere between 3 000 and 8 000 for a typical high ring, and it is the number that lets you tune any sound you use afterwards.


## The method, step by step

Work in a quiet room at a comfortable volume, never loud. Start around 4 000 hertz. Ask one question only: is the test tone higher or lower than my tinnitus? Move a large step in that direction, then halve the step each time, the way you would find a number between one and a hundred. Five or six comparisons is usually enough. Note the frequency, then repeat the whole thing the next day, because a single session is unreliable.

## The octave trap

The single most common error is matching an octave away, hearing 4 000 as 8 000 or the reverse. It happens to trained listeners too. Guard against it by explicitly comparing your best match with the tone one octave above and one octave below, and choosing the closest of the three. If two feel equally close, note both and let the next session decide.


## What to do with the number

Two practical uses. First, tune the background sound you use for sleep or work so that its energy sits around your pitch rather than somewhere irrelevant; the sound then blends instead of adding a second unrelated noise. Second, track the number over months. A stable pitch is reassuring, and a pitch that changes markedly, or becomes one-sided, is a reason to see a clinician.


## What it does not do

Knowing your pitch does not treat anything. There is no evidence that listening to your own frequency removes tinnitus, and any product promising that is going beyond what has been shown. Sound-based approaches in general were reviewed by Cochrane, which found no strong evidence of superiority or inferiority against other options. Pitch matching is a measurement, useful for tuning and tracking, not a therapy.


## Protect your ears while you do it

Keep every test tone quiet. Loud sound exposure is one of the recognised causes of tinnitus, and there is no reason to add risk while measuring. If a tone is uncomfortable, it is far too loud. Never test with earphones at high volume, and stop if you feel any pain or fullness.
