# How to improve number sense as an adult

What number sense is, what research on estimation and magnitude does and does not show, and practical exercises that build a feel for numbers.

## What number sense means

Number sense is a loose term for a feel for quantities: knowing roughly how big a number is, whether an answer is plausible, and how numbers can be broken apart and recombined. Someone with good number sense sees that 49 × 21 must be close to 1,000, that 3/7 is a little under a half, and that a bill of 12,000 for a coffee is a mistake. It is less about calculating fast than about noticing when a calculation has gone wrong.


## Two meanings in research

Researchers use the term in two ways. The first is an approximate number system, a capacity to estimate quantities without counting, which Dehaene describes as shared by adults, infants and other animals. The second, used more in education, is a flexible understanding of written numbers: place value, magnitude and the relations between operations. The exercises in this guide target the second, because that is the part adults can practise directly.


## What the research does and does not show

Halberda, Mazzocco and Feigenson found that the non-verbal approximation ability of 14-year-olds correlated with their past scores on maths achievement tests, going back to kindergarten. Chen and Li’s 2014 meta-analysis found a modest but significant association between this number acuity and maths performance. These are correlations. They do not show that training the approximate system improves arithmetic, and most of the studies involve children rather than adults. Treat the exercises below as practice in useful skills, not as a proven way to rewire anything.


## Place numbers on a line

A simple exercise comes from research on estimation: draw a line from 0 to 1,000, or from 0 to 100,000, and mark where a given number sits. Siegler and Booth studied how children’s estimates on such lines become more accurate with development, and Schneider and colleagues’ meta-analysis found that number line estimation correlated with broader mathematical competence in children. For adults the value is practical: placing 7,300 on a line from 0 to 10,000, or 0.35 between 0 and 1, forces you to think in proportions rather than digits.


## Estimate before every calculation

Make it a rule to say a rough answer before calculating anything, then compare. 38 × 52 is roughly 40 × 50 = 2,000; the exact answer is 1,976. Over time the gap between estimate and answer tends to shrink, and you start noticing when an exact answer is wildly off. This single habit carries more of number sense than any trick.


## Learn benchmark numbers

Anchors make estimation possible. A million seconds is about 11.6 days, while a billion seconds is nearly 32 years. A quarter is 25%, an eighth 12.5% and a third about 33%. The population of your own city, the price of things you buy often and the length of a room you know all serve the same purpose. Every estimate is made relative to something you already know, so the more anchors you have, the better your estimates can be.


## Break numbers apart in several ways

Flexibility means seeing 48 as 50 − 2, as 40 + 8, as 6 × 8 and as 16 × 3, and picking the version that makes a problem easy. Practise by taking a number and writing as many decompositions as you can in a minute. Then use them: 48 × 25 becomes 12 × 100 = 1,200 once you see 48 as 12 × 4.


## Compare without calculating

Which is larger, 3/7 or 4/9? Cross-multiply: 3 × 9 = 27 against 4 × 7 = 28, so 4/9 is larger. Which is larger, 17 × 23 or 20 × 20? The second, because two numbers with the same sum give a larger product the closer together they are, and indeed 17 × 23 = 391 while 20 × 20 = 400. Comparison exercises train judgement about magnitude without the burden of an exact answer.


## Think in orders of magnitude

For large or small numbers, the first question is how many digits the answer should have. Is it in the thousands or the millions? Keeping track of the zeros separately, so that 300 × 8,000 becomes 3 × 8 = 24 followed by five zeros, which is 2,400,000, is how people with good number sense avoid errors by a factor of ten. When an answer arrives, check its number of digits before its first digit.


## Check reasonableness in daily life

Receipts, bills, recipe scaling and figures in the news are free practice. Before looking at a total, estimate it. When a news story reports a percentage, ask what the base is. When a recipe is scaled by 1.5, check the new quantities against your sense of the original. The aim is a habit of asking whether a number makes sense, not a daily workout.


## Use calculation as the workshop

Number sense and calculation reinforce each other. Methods such as rounding and correcting, or subtracting by counting up, depend on seeing numbers flexibly, and practising them builds that flexibility. Short, regular calculation practice, with an estimate before each answer, is a straightforward way to work on both at once.


## Estimation is a low-pressure entry point

Some people avoid estimating because it feels like guessing, and guessing feels like failing. A rough answer cannot be exactly wrong, only closer or further, which makes estimation a comfortable place to rebuild confidence with numbers. Start with quantities you meet every day, such as prices and distances, where you can check the real answer immediately.


## How to tell it is improving

Track the size of your estimation errors over time rather than your speed. If your estimates for everyday calculations land closer to the exact answers than they used to, and you catch your own mistakes more often, your number sense is improving in the way that matters. Nobody needs a score for this; a short note of a few estimates a week is enough.
